Mr. Neil M. Smith is presently the Financial Secretary in the British Virgin Islands Government, a position he has held from May 2006. In this role, he advises Government through the Minister of Finance, on fiscal policies and how best to manage the economy. He is also serves as the EU Regional Authorizing Officer for the Caribbean. He works very long hours determined to make decisions that serve the best interest of the people of the Virgin Islands through fiscal and economic policy, in addition to effecting the operations of the Ministry of Finance. From 2003 to 2006 Mr. Smith held the position of Deputy Financial Secretary.

Niel SmithDuring that stint Mr. Smith provided advice to the Financial Secretary on all fiscal and economic matters in addition to the management and preparation of the Government's Budget.

In 2005 Mr. Smith was seconded to the New Zealand Treasury for six months where he worked in the Budget and Macroeconomic branch.

Mr. Smith's early career included employment as an Engineer at the BVI Electricity Corporation for over a decade. His career began in the area of transmission and distribution (working on power lines). He later worked as the Generation Engineer responsible for all the power stations on the islands. Prior to attending University Mr. Smith worked at the Customs Department for two years.

In 1994 Mr. Smith earned his Bachelor of Engineering Degree from the University of Dayton and in 2001 he earned his MBA from Wright State University with a concentration in finance.

Mr. Smith is a Chartered Electrical Engineer and Certified Open Water Scuba Diver (Advanced). His interests include Aeronautics, Scuba Diving, Architecture, Sailing, Reading and Hiking.

Mr. Smith is a Member of Phi Beta Lambda Business Honour Society, the Institute of Electrical Engineers, Golden Key National Honour Society and Eta Kappa Nu Electrical Honour Society.

Mr. Smith presently holds the positions of Elder, Auditor and Education Secretary at the Maranatha SDA Church located in East End. He is also the Architect of the Maranatha SDA Church Building.

He was born on 30th July, 1970 in Great Britain, is married and has two children.
